Richard “Rick” Jacob Mercer Sr.
February 9, 2025
With love and great sadness, we announce the passing of Richard Jacob Mercer. He passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at the age of 49. Richard was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland and relocated to London, Ontario where he lived out the rest of his life.
Although he will be deeply missed, loved ones rejoice as he is once again reunited with his predeceased mother and best friend Mercia Lyons-Mercer as well as his predeceased sister Norma Smith. He is survived by his father Wallace Mercer; and by his brother Wallace Mercer Jr. A devoted and loving father to his 2 sons, Jonathan Jaques and Richard Mercer Jr., his stepdaughter Jessica Hanson, and daughter-in-law Alexis Lewis. Adored grandfather of Jacob Mercer, Ellaina Mercer and Richard Mercer III.
Richard, affectionately known as “Rick” had a passion for the Maple Leafs and the London Knights. He enjoyed cooking a nice home-cooked meal, watching the games at home as well as going to the Knights games regularly with his son Richard Jr. and grandchildren. He had such a passion for the sport and he passed it down to his sons and grandson. He always made sure to spend his every minute with them when they stepped on the ice, he had dreams he’d see his family name on the tv screen.
He enjoyed drawing, music, guitar, sports and camping. His happiest moments were spent with his family and doing the “good old fashion things” as he would say. He had an unbreakable bond with his grandchildren and was always known as the “fun Papa”, the one who had no limits when it came to quality time with the kids, if they wanted to do it, Papa Rick made it happen. On nights he wasn’t taking them out for a night on the town, he enjoyed doing the simple things like baking, going to the park, making arts and crafts, and just cuddling up on the couch eating treats and watching a movie.
The funeral service celebrating Richard’s life will be held at Northview Funeral Chapel, 1490 Highbury Avenue North, London on Sunday, February 16, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Ricky, I'm so, so sorry you have left so soon. I know you had plans that won't be fulfilled, places you won't get to see, but especially we won't get together. You have left an amazing legacy in your family. All of which you were so proud of. I pray you will sleep in peace. I pray for peace for your dad, your brother, your son's and their families. That they will have comfort in their memories of you. Aunt Marcy
Thankyou for being the highlight of my childhood. You will be loved, missed and honoured forever.

My man, I was so shocked to get the call about you and I wish I had made the time to come visit since now I'm not going to be able to. I will miss our battles on Hockey and the other things that gave us good fun to torture eachother about. Hopefully your resting peacefully and without the pain that i know you were dealing with on a regular basis. I will always be thinking of you when I try and get into it with about sports but it just would never be the same thing. RIP my friend.
