Reginald Moffat Edgar

April 17, 1931 - April 11, 2025

With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Reginald Moffat Edgar, our cherished father, papa, great-grandpapa, beloved brother, uncle, and family patriarch. Reg passed away peacefully on Friday, April 11, 2025, at Victoria Hospital, LHSC, in his 94th year, reuniting with his beloved wife, Barbara Ann (McLean,1995).

Reg was born on April 17, 1931, in London, Ontario, to Alvin Edgar (1975) and Mae (Moffat 2006). His entire life was defined by hard work, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family.

A devoted husband, Reg shared his life with Barbara Ann for 42 years. Later, he found love again with his second wife, Margaret, of 26 years. He was a loving and nurturing father to his four children: Stephen Edgar (Carol), Daniel Edgar (Mary Jeanne), Rodger Edgar, and Kathleen Currado (Vito). Reg also formed a lasting relationship with Margaret’s children, considering them dear friends: Steve Glover (Fran) and Laurie Nelson (Steve).

Reg found his greatest joy in his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, whom he adored: Stephanie Cassin (Travis), Lexton and Loxley Cassin, Wesley Edgar (Dana), Cameron Edgar (Stefanie), Kate Edgar (Jamie), Spencer and Nicholas Edgar, Sophia, and Michael Currado. He took immense pride in being their Papa and Great Grandpapa, guiding them with wisdom, love, and unwavering support.

Reg was the second oldest of nine siblings: Ronald Edgar (2015), Marilyn Bentley (Ray), Anita Lemmon (Bob 2022), Jim Edgar (Gail), Joan Gerhard (Jim 2009), Barry Edgar (Penny), Bob Edgar (Jan), and Lynda Collins (Brad). He was not just a brother but also a mentor, confidant, and friend—always ready to lend a helping hand, offer advice or share good times.

From a young age, Reg exemplified resilience and responsibility. At just nine years old, he supported his family by delivering groceries on his bicycle for Superior Grocer and Drugstore in London, earning $5 for a six-day workweek while managing a $100 float—an impressive responsibility for such a young boy in the 1940s. A few years later, he worked alongside his older brother Ron, setting up pins at a local bowling alley. By sixteen, he began working at Super Silk Hosiery as a full-fashion knitter, a job he fondly reminisced about until he was laid off in the mid-50s. With a young family to support, he worked briefly at Wolverine Tube and then transitioned to cement finishing before establishing himself as a custom home builder with his brother-in-law, Ray Bentley. Later, as a proud owner of Gar-Ley Construction, he built homes “with the Personal Touch” in London and the surrounding area alongside his son, Rodger, leaving a lasting mark on the Ilderton community before retiring in 2001.

Reg was a man of boundless energy and strength—the grass never grew under his feet, literally! His greatest passion was his farm north of Thorndale, where he spent 45 years meticulously maintaining 10 acres (mostly grass) and caring for his beloved pond. With considerable encouragement from his family to downsize, in 2019, at the age of 88, he embraced a new chapter by moving to what he fondly called “The Condo.”

Although our family mourns his passing deeply, we know how fortunate we were to have this extraordinary man in our lives for 94 years. He shaped our world with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love. His presence enriched us in countless ways, leaving a legacy that will continue to guide his family for generations to come.

A heartfelt thank you to the 5th Floor Cardiology and Palliative Care Unit at Victoria Hospital, LHSC, for their compassionate care and support to our family.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at Northview Funeral Chapel, 1490 Highbury Avenue North, London, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m where the funeral service will take place on Thursday, April 17, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., with interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 150 Cain Street, St. Marys, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Reg’s honour to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Alice Saddy Association.

My sincerest sympathy to the Edgar family on the loss of a wonderful man. Besides being a Heritage Road neighbour of Reg and his family as well as a neighbour of Margaret’s family (the Lamonds), Gar-Ley Construction built our home in the late 70’s. And then my late husband, Murray, worked with Mary Jeanne (MJ as we knew her) at the Regional Assessment Office for a few years. It’s been a pleasure to have known the Edgar family and I wish you peace and comfort at this sad time.

So sorry to hear of Reg’s passing. He was truly a great man! I remember so many great memories that always involved laughter. I remember the laughs over who was better US or Canada. I remember Reg saying jokingly how they brought their trash to the US. I remember going to cliddys cottage and not being able to sleep because they were all laughing so loud. I also remember another night not being able to sleep thinking we were going to be abducted by aliens after Reg had taken Dad to an open field where there was a large round burn spot that they swore a spaceship had landed. On behalf of my parents (Betty and Ed Rodgers) I want you to know how much they loved your Mom and Dad and spoke so foundly of them. They always looked forward to any time they could spend together. One thing I am sure of is there is going to be a party in heaven when they all reunite We will hold you all in our thoughts and prayers! ❤️🙏🏻

~ Karen Robert (Rodgers)
