After a brief illness with Pancreatic Cancer, Ken passed away peacefully at home with his wife, Debora Bond Akers by his side. Ken also leaves behind his children, Siobhan (John Speirs) Akers of Glasgow, Scotland, his sons, Ryan (Sandy) Lale of St Thomas and T.Jay Lale of London. Grandfather to Tyler (Kendra) Lale, Hallie Ellen and Max Kenneth Speirs and step grandson Matthew Sprague. Brother to Wayne (Ermy) Akers of Burlington and Cathy (Ian) Ruiter of Churchill, Ontario. Brother-in-law to Craig Bond of London and Scott Bond of Belmont as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his father, Frank Akers (2004), mother, Ellen (2016) and mother-in-law, Donna Bond (2004).
Ken attended the University of Windsor for 1 year of pre-med before deciding to travel to Europe. He backpacked through several countries picking up odd jobs along the way but eventually finding work for several months at Mishmar David a Kibbutz in Israel where he worked as a shepherd. He eventually returned to University where he graduated with a BA and BSW (1977) and an MSW (1981).
Ken dedicated his whole life and career to serving the Children and Youth of Ontario. He held several Director and Executive Director positions including, The Parkhill Girls Home, The St. Lawrence Child and Youth Association in Kingston, The Stratford Association for Community Living and The Huron House Boys Home in Brights Grove, Ontario. He was also President of O.C.C.O.D.A. (Ontario Contract Custody Observation and Detention Homes Association).
Upon his retirement in 2013, Ken and Debbie travelled extensively throughout Europe, Scotland, Canada and the USA. They enjoyed spending their winters (over 30 years) in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where they met many life-long friends from the United States, Canada, Mexico and around the world.
Ken enjoyed all types of sports including golf, and baseball but his passion was fishing! The “Gentleman’s Fishing Club” circa 1977 and continues to present day with his buddies from University days…Ken, Steve, Shaun, Paul and eventually JR made it an annual event that garnered more laughs and antics than actually catching fish but that didn’t matter as it kept their longstanding friendship, camaraderie and love for each other intact.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Ken’s life will be held at Northview Funeral Chapel, 1490 Highbury Avenue North, London on Saturday, July 12, 2025 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. with words of remembrance at 2:30 p.m.

Debbie. We are so deeply saddened by the news and the reality of Ken’s departure but so fortunate to have shared such a long journey with him. I have been struggling to find the words to adequately honour the beautiful soul that centred and carried Ken for a lifetime. Amanda and I have found ourselves repeatedly lost in quiet contemplation these last many days. Finding Ken at every turn. Remembering. Considering. Knowing we were blessed to have his friendship - and the love that was embedded there. Honest and steadfast. As twenty-somethings, Ken was the Sir Galahad amongst us with a heart designed to save a world. And he did. He found a way. He found you - and a love that would anchor all his tomorrows. Our Dad talks, on lakeside porches, always brought with them stories of Siobhan and Ryan and T. Jay. The pride. The obvious love. The light in those eyes. We will miss him so much. How could we not? But then Ken has always owned a place in our hearts - and that’s where we’ll find him. Just a comforting “hello” away. With love from Ottawa … Shaun and Amanda
Debbie, Ryan, T. Jay and Sibohan. My sincerest apologies and thoughts to the loss of Ken. I got to see him at my dad's funeral a few years back and rekindled stories of Mavericks baseball. Thinking of you in these times. Rest in peace Ken. Adam Taylor and Family
Dear Debbie and Family: So sorry to learn of your loss. Ken was a hell of a guy. He will be missed. Unfortunately I have a commitment on July 12, but my thoughts will be with you.
Deb and family My most sincere condolences to you all. May your many wonderful memories bring you peace and give you comfort. Thinking of you. Sincerely, Beckie Robb
Deb and family, I am so sorry to hear the news of Ken passing. I enjoyed working at the Boys Home under Ken’s leadership. Ken respected the staff and allowed us the freedom to do the job we were trained to do. He was very level headed and kept his cool when difficult situations came up. My condolences at this difficult time.
Debbie and Family We were very sorry to hear about Ken passing. Sending condolences to you and your Family at this very difficult time. May he rest in peace. Gord, Michele and Family

My thoughts are with you and the rest of your family Debbie. I loved working with Ken in our early years as social workers, he was such a fun staff member. It was great to reconnect with him occasionally, at Ministry meetings when he was the Executive Director at the boys home. And I so appreciate crossing paths with both of you over the past few years in Puerto Vallarta. I will remember Ken fondly as one of those truly nice guys.
