Jurgen Klaus

May 6, 1943 - October 12, 2024

Jurgen, 81, of London, passed away on October 12, 2024, peacefully at home with family by his side after a courageous 5 year-long battle with cancer.
Jurgen was born on May 6, 1943 to Kathe & Gerd Klaus in Hamburg, Germany.  In 1961 Jurgen made the decision to follow his brother and best friend, Gus, to London, Canada, which he called home for the remainder of his life. He spent his professional life working at London Life, where he made a number of lifelong friendships. His true passion though was soccer. Jurgen played soccer into his 70’s and coached innumerable teams over his 40+ year coaching career. He sat on the board at soccer clubs, took travel teams to Europe and developed hundreds of players. He is a founding member of the Greater London Soccer Club and was credited with bringing women’s soccer to the German Canadian Football Club, which now boasts multiple women’s soccer teams.
Jurgen was predeceased by his parents Kathe & Gerd Klaus and his brother Gus Klaus. He is survived by his family: Susan Klaus & Jodie Fraser; Alan, Gita & Asher Klaus; Jenn, Fabian, Brynn, Griffin & Arissa Findlay; Cloe Klaus & Allegra Lucia; Mary Kay Klaus.
Coach, Mentor, Friend, Glacier Man, Son, Brother, Dad & Opa, Jurgen was many things to many people throughout his 81 years of life, but most of all he was known as a kind and generous man who had much to share with those who knew him and was always, himself, willing to learn and grow as a person.
His family fondly remembers some of Jurgen’s more notable teachings and would like to share those:
It’s only Money
Friends can be found anywhere and become family
It’s important to be kind and to help others when you can
You can reach for new dreams at anytime
Doing something you didn’t think you wanted to can be a fun life changing experience
Always appreciate the arts- go to the concerts, watch the plays, listen to all the music (as loud as you can)
Take all of the trips; this world is beautiful and there are amazing people everywhere
Spend your time doing what you love and surrounded by those you love
Always keep fighting
Sometimes hope and a positive attitude can be the best medicine
It’s fun to play – but it’s best to win
Football (soccer) is life

RIP Jurgen. My friends and I have fond memories of playing on your women's soccer team as young adults. Without you, many of us would have hung up our cleats as we left high school. Thank you for your contributions to girls and womens soccer in London. You have not only made an impact on our generation, but set the culture for future generations of female soccer players to keep playing throughout their lives.

Jurgen was one of those rare souls. As a friend, he brought warmth, humor, wisdom, and support to everyone around him. He had a great love of sports, expecially soccer. It was a pleasure to have Jurgen as a member of our foursome. He always wanted to win but encouraged us all to do better. Rarely did he miss the nineteenth where the camaraderie shone through. We will miss him dearly. Our sincere condolences to the family and friends.

Jurgen Klaus was a great man! He personified the love of soccer down at the German Club. My wife and I always enjoyed running into him at the club and seeing his big smile. He told the best stories. I fondly remember one particular summer night out on the patio when he sat with me and some other GCFC Masters players for a couple of hours, just talking and having a great time. I am very grateful for his kindness, generosity, and friendship, and will miss him dearly. Rest in peace, Jurgen!

I had the pleasure of playing soccer with Jurgen for many years at the German Canadian Football Club. As one of the few players that spoke German, Jurgen and I had a connection and shared many stories of our time in Germany. As a fellow GCFC board member for many years, I know firsthand the passion he had for soccer and how proud he was of the women's teams he coached. After 21 years of friendship, it was hard to say good-bye to my dear friend. It was a blessing to know Jurgen and develop the friendship that we had. The legacy he leaves behind will last lifetimes.

~ Terry OShea

Hard to believe I met my cousin 54 years ago. He came to visit Hamburg and kept coming back. London CA was his home, and we enjoyed being part of the family there over the years and watching the famiy grow, vacations, christenings, weddings, getting together. This summer Hamburg was where we met. Still introducing me to cousins I had not seen since childhood. He always made you feel included, comfortable, no matter where.
