Earl Laurie Smith

July 25, 1936 - September 8, 2024

Earl Smith peacefully passed away in London, Ontario on Sunday, September 8, 2024 in his 89th year. He was born on July 25, 1936 in Estevan, Saskatchewan to Violet and George Smith (both deceased). His mischievous smile, twinkling eyes and contagious sense of humour will be missed by his wife Loretta Smith, his daughters Angela Arnold (Anthony) and Debra Geiger, and son Shawn Smith (Deb). As well, his sister Hazel Berman (Ron), brothers-in-law Winston Buttery (sister Edith-deceased), Kevin Davis (late sister-in-law Rita) and Allie O’Donnell (Marlene) share our loss. Earl was especially delighted by his grandchildren, Richard Geiger, Luke, Eric, and Darren Jackson, Samantha Mutsaers, Elena Smith, and Harper and Malcolm Grineau. He will be missed by his innumerable nieces and nephews and 11 great-grandchildren.

Earl treasured his 30 years as a firefighter in service to the London community. He was an excellent carpenter and would often be found in his workshop building items that caught his imagination.  He loved playing darts and was a member of the London Men’s dart league and the Victory Legion Darts. Also, you could find him on the golf course with his brothers-in-law. If there was construction in the area, you would often find him watching and learning what and how things were being done. In his leisure time, he loved reading about sailing ships and World War II.

While his last several years were painful, suffering with Lewy Body dementia, his strong will and love for his family kept him with us.

Earl’s celebration of life is being held at Northview Funeral Chapel, 1490 Highbury Avenue North, London on Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The family asked that any charitable donations be made to the Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners.

Shawn and Deb. Our condolences for the loss of your father. Shawn, I remember some late nights at HQ talking with you and inevitably we could end up talking about your father, and Lisa’s father Bob. Both were tough old school firefighters. May your father rest in peace! Dave Gurney, Lisa Barr

Earl had an amazing sense of humour. He had a way of insulting me and making me laugh at the same time. Rest in peace Earl.

Dear Aunt Loretta. I am so sorry for your loss. My deepest condolences to you, Debra and your entire family. I have many fond memories of playing darts at your house and was always amazed and impressed by Earl’s carpentry skills. He was always a kind and gentle man. You are in my thoughts and prayers at this very sad time.
