Carlisle “Carl” Sloane

October 8, 2023

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Carlisle Sloane, or “Carl” to those who knew him, in London on Sunday, October 8, 2023.

Carl was born in Sarnia to Dr. Manville and Amy Sloane, and was raised in Toronto. He is predeceased by his parents and brother Spencer Sloane.

Carl was a well-read and highly intelligent man who had a passion for classical music.  He was a graduate of the University of Toronto in Pharmacy.  Carl taught himself many languages which led him to translating for the government. He loved music, and especially was passionate about the harpsichord, including the one he built himself.  He spent countless hours at the University of Toronto Libraries. Upon moving to London, he embraced the University of Western Ontario and its many libraries, most especially the music library.

He was a kind and gentle soul who appreciated the care extended to him in his life by his extended family.

A private family service will be held in the future in Sarnia.

Carl was a welcome visitor to Western's Music Library and we will miss him greatly. He often brought CDs from his collection to donate and they revealed his deep love for baroque opera. Inevitably I would find one or two recordings not already in our collection. I send condolences from Western Libraries to the family and friends he has left behind.
